佳昀 GaYoon Shana Han
I am a visual artist from south Korea, currently based in Berlin, Germany.
At the core of my practice is an investigation into impermanence and the fleeting moment, exploring how transience manifests across human experience. Within this broader theme, my work branches into distinct thematic series, delving into the impermanence of emotions, memory and etc.
Inspired primarily by landscape, I capture moments of oneness with the natural landscape, instances where memories flash like film reels, dissolving and merging into indeterminate forms akin to breaking waves and spray.
My practice begins with a simple question. “What remains when every experience is already vanishing?”
For seventeen years, I worked as a handbag designer in an industry devoted to desire, possession,
and the creation of objects people longed to own. While shaping material aspirations through design,
I simultaneously explored the intersection of fashion and fine art through independent exhibitions beginning in 2017.
During the pandemic, however, a subtle transformation emerged.
The impulse to pursue external validation and material accumulation gradually dissolved,
and my attention shifted inward. Rather than designing objects to be possessed,
I became increasingly drawn to the fleeting moments of quiet happiness found in our ordinary lives.
In 2022, after signing with a gallery in South Korea and presenting a series of exhibitions, I decided to leave the design
industry. Since 2023, I have devoted myself fully to an artistic practice centered on impermanence, the energy flow of
the universe, and the unseen dimensions that exist beyond our perception.
My work investigates the Buddhist concept of Anicca and the biblical notion of Hevel
- the impermanence and transience of all conditioned phenomena -
alongside the distortion and idealization of memory, and the invisible
waves that connect existence on both cosmic and psychological scales.
Every sensation of pleasure feels intensely real in the moment, yet simultaneously dissolves into absence. Memory itself becomes a creative act - fragmented, reconstructed, and continuously rewritten. Through a visual language that merges landscape and abstraction, I explore traces of emergence and disappearance, formation and dissolution. Landscapes, personal photographs, and reconstructed imagery become points of departurerather than destinations. Water, light, atmosphere, and vibration function as metaphors for states that continually transform.
These paintings are not representations of places, but records of observing feeling itself - an attempt to witness the ceaseless flux underlying experience and to contemplate the boundary between presence and emptiness, being and non-being.
